HumANist society of New Mexico

And, as Seth pointed out, we need to take care not to let our differences separate us from people who agree with us on the most fundamental issue of our common humanity. The strength of our community will be measured in our openness to everyone who accepts and defends the basic humanity of every person. Our strength as individuals will be measured by our willingness to have our own assumptions challenged by others' ideas.

Along those lines, this month brought us more opportunities to connect with other groups who share our humanist values, including Congregation Nahalat Shalom and Muslims and Jews United, with whom we and the First Unitarian Church cosponsored a conversation with Peter Beinart on the topic of his latest book Being Jewish after the Destruction of Gaza. The discussion was excellent, and I expect that we will have more opportunities to join with these and other like-minded groups on future projects.

All of these events are helping people find us. We are continuing to grow our membership. And while growth is a good thing, it will also be a challenge. For anyone who wants to help us navigate these challenges, please consider joining one of the new committees (Membership, Communication, and Outreach) we’re kicking off in November. Contact me if you want to be a part of this.
